Simmer Down: Fantastic Mr.Afrofunk
December 09, 2009 03:15 PM PST
Did you check out Fantastic Mr.Fox? Nice little flick, gotta say. As the screen flickered in front of our spellbound peepers, we consumed spicy submarine sandwiches from Quiznos and enjoyed smuggled contraband liquids. A well put together bit of entertainment that somehow sparked an afrofunky, mildly disco kind of underpants driven apartment boogie afterwards. So, here's a 30 minute mix of the tracks which made the boogie successful. For the first time, a track has been repeated from a previous podcast! But it's in a different context and if you're anything like us, you have no problem listening to a good track more than once. Some of these also made their way onto Friday's dance floor at Augusta House and executed their job perfectly. Among those was the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo track which wraps up the mix. This is one of my top songs of all time and I don't even know the name of it. Please let us know if you do. This Friday and the subsequent, you can interact with us back at the Harmony Lounge (589 College st). Many humans are scared of College street these days because hefty numbers of the folks who flock there are frightening, obnoxious and may savagely tear apart and eat stray dogs/cats after the bars close. So, we want to get it back! The nights have been getting progressively more lively and it would be amazing to have your participation also. DOGGIN' IT
TRACKLISTING i. Make it Slow (Gerd rmx) – ROB (white)

Flyering and Facebook invites are angles of promotion that are decent but seem to have their limitations.
The implementation of video, language and cheap drinks as well as this podcast seems to slowly be helping us express the difference between our parties and other parties that may have similar music labels on their advertising. With so much information coming at all of us everyday, it isn't easy to harness attention and this video is an attempt to bond a little bit more with all of you who have graciously downloaded the mixes or come out to the soirees. It is always possible to take things up a notch. More and more of you have begun to contact us with praise and constructive criticism, which makes me even happier than meeting someone who loves anchovies on pizza as much as I do. It really boggles my mind that people could hate anchovies. Anyway, we always want the music, mixing, design, content etc.. to get better and nobody can shed light on this better than you. stay well! Mogpaws & VJAM P.S. Here's a wee video of one of the LPs we picked up at the FLIPSIDE record show here in Toronto at the Gladstone Hotel (Sunday Nov.27th) Pedro Laza y sus Pelayeros - Cartagena Alegre http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIaZJOFwQFw&feature=channel Simmer Down: Maintaining the Smooth (PART A: MOGPAWS)

Every single time we gather and push record, Victor is heading off to some far corner of the universe. Last time, Indonesia...the time before, Malta and this time...Amsterdam. So we push the button hoping that at the end of the evening some material will be coherent and usable for the podcast. When listening back today, 95% of what we recorded was giggling and fuffing about in our knickers, knocking over tables and throwing water balloons at the elderly trying to cross busy intersections. The end result is 3 minutes of jaw-wobbling at the beginning and nothing but music from there on in. Lucky you! You may notice that some episodes are missing at the bottom. We've even got messages requesting their return. That is called flattery, and it will get you everywhere... yes, everywhere.
This Friday, November 20th & the following Friday, November 27th, Mogpaws will be back at HARMONY LOUNGE (remember Victor went to Amsterdam) with some special guests. ElMan, a good chum and grand record guru will be bringing all kinds of modern and ol' school latin/tropical soundbombs..... so do swing by. If timing permits it for him, Andy Williams from Montreal will also come by to help further increase the rucosity. No Cover! MAINTAINING THE SMOOTH (Part A) ---TRACKLIST (39:44) 1. The other day a certain someone got a little vigorous whilst making clean the household glassware. A weak section of a glass (formerly containing strawberry kiwi juice that had been on sale from Shopper’s Drug Mart) gave way; the result was a notable laceration. As when injured by anything physically or emotionally, the immediate reaction involves fleeing to the turntables and clinging to them like a frightened baby monkey. The only comfort being warm milk direct from the maternal bosom. Instead of getting bandaged up, it dawned. Why not make a ska n’ reggae mix while frolicking about in your own life-syrup? This, of course, was a terrible idea and the mix wasn't strung together until the wound was adequately sterilized and bound. Fellow music junkie, Gino, smacked the Steel Pulse track down in a mad Facebook posting.... from there the iTunes store got .99 cents and the Simmer Down reggae force became one troop the richer. Add to that a Barrington Levy binge and the Laurel Aitken anthology appearing on the doorstep…. Well, it wasn’t long before all the tracks were gathered around begging to be mixed. We will most likely delve back into that department this Friday at Augusta House and definitely at Harmony Lounge, a new haunt, where a gritty night is in it’s embryonic stages.
Oh, Ain't it Irie mix (32:32) i. Sex Machine – Laurel Aitken (Pressure Drop)

Sure, it’s a tad on the nippy side today. A slight firming of the nipples at behest of the breeze. Any unpleasantness may be eradicated with merely a little time gathered around the turntables, a freshly opened lager in the mitts and the prospect of social gatherings at which there is an equal combination of quality human engagement, sizzling music and vigorous rump momentum. The last two weeks have been spent reconnecting with the Brazilcentric members of the record collection and going on the hunt for additional recruits. The urge stemmed from an invitation to disc jockey alongside a couple of high-caliber groups at the Lula Lounge tomorrow, an invitation gladly accepted. We caught Repurcussions in the summer at El Mocambo before Curumin hit the stage and things got nutty. They describe themselves thusly….. “The live show is dynamic, incorporating the drums and melodies of afoxe, coco, congo-de-ouro, and maracatu together with Cuban MCs, West African vibes, skanky guitar, trumpet and heavy bass.” In addition, the enchanting Aline Morales will be knockin’ shit down with her Forro group. It’s inevitably a good night when she’s involved. In short, it would be ill-advised to miss this.

Not always associated with soul, jazz, hip hop and afro-latin vibes, Sir David Attenborough is none-the-less an iconic figure who has blown many a mind throughout his lengthy career. Music is a reflection on the rest of life and thus a music based show needn't always be based on people involved with music.
We've been wanting to implement chatter a little more, you can tell us if that's a good idea or not. It sounds eloquent to me, but I could be mistaken. At any rate, we have all the mixes on file without banter, so if you want just the tunes... it can be arranged. If you subscribe on iTunes or download the file... you can always just skip ahead... the mix begins just before the 7 minute mark. Tomorrow...Friday... we'll be back at AUGUSTA HOUSE and although we've been bouncing around the calendar like Gummi Bears, it looks like the 1st Friday of the month is where we'll be staying. Come on out if you can, it's Victor's birthday and you don't want him to be lonely, do you?
Tracklisting i. Back to My Roots – Lamont Dozier (Warner Bros)

Havana Cultura, a celebration of Cuban culture, gallops into Toronto on Thursday and it was only natural that we, a Maltese guy and a white dude, were put in charge of opening celebrations. Fortunately, our collections are not skimpy in this department and it's a good opportunity to immerse ourselves further in the crazy multitude of music that has emerged from the island. eLman, a top notch fellow and wise sage in the ways of latin rhythms has agreed to join us in battle for the evening and this makes us mighty pleased as we've been wanting to collaborate for some time. He is also host of the Dos Mundos radio show, which has a home on Podomatic (dosmundos.podomatic.com) We will be joining him tomorrow on his program, which airs Tuesdays on CIUT between 12pm & 2pm. So, come out to LeVack Block, tell a chum and let us all jive simultaneously to tracks concocted in Cuba or which couldn't have been concocted without Cuba. Yes, yes, don't worry... we'll play some cumbia too. AHI-NAMA tracklisting (44:33) i. El 4-5-6 - Los Brito (Waxing Deep)

My granny was in town from England for the last couple of weeks and it was really the first time we’ve got to properly hang out since my grandfather died a year or two back. I’m no religious fellow and pondering on the almighty has never been a priority except maybe on a mushroom trip when I was 19. My grandfather was a devout gentleman and I respected him a heap…so while thinking about him with my granny, it made me hope that his faith went rewarded somehow after he passed away. In general social situations, our faith and thoughts on the grand deity don’t arise too frequently and rather awkwardly if they do. Even if we happen to be atheist or agnostic, maybe it shouldn’t be so weird to chat about. Gotta get deep sometimes. I always say that music is my calling, the thing I’m supposed to do and the reason I seem to be broke all the time. Is that a genetic thing? Or does a calling somehow refer to your God-given function? Regardless of faith-stance, it’s at least interesting to wonder about from time to time. But enough about that, let’s get in the funkmobile. Next Party Invite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uM0Nz1-E3U

EVERY WEDNESDAY @ LeVack Block Simmer Down Podcast: Them Ol' Vocals
August 21, 2009 04:52 PM PDT
Victor, that little globetrotting rapscallion, is now in Indonesia to be reunited with his beloved for almost a full lunar cycle. Luckily, in the dying hours before his departure, we managed to sneak in a few minutes of jabber. Over Jack Daniels and the sound of crickets we opted for selecting songs from some of our favourite soul n' jazz vocal specialists. Save for the gents at the end, this is all from back in the day. I was excited to find the short 6:40 version of Sinnerman as the original 10:20 version is a bit too epic for most to stay on the train. Who knew Take Five had a vocal version? We've been getting more e-mails lately and this is a trend we'd really like to see escalate. There's sadly not enough good music lovers for us to remain solitary and isolated.... it doesn't matter where in the world we are. Communicate. i. Shadrack - Louis Prima
